PBP Kids Corner Spotlight

Our Purple Backpack Project is a great opportunity for the community to join Dirt City Sanctuary and serve some of the neediest among us. Children dream big and give big! We’d like to highlight the young people who are jumping in and contributing to our PBP by taking on our Purple Backpack Project Challenge!

Emily C- 10 years old

Since toddler-hood, Emily has been incredibly nurturing, generous, and empathetic. She donated her hair for the first time at age five and has done it twice since. She is constantly doing things for others: using her tooth fairy or birthday or book fair money on gifts for her siblings; writing encouraging notes; folding a load of laundry or cleaning up a room just because.

She is also creative and entrepreneurial. She loves to create stories, pictures, and projects. She has several notebooks and even a ‘charity binder’ she started about a year ago where she writes ideas of all sorts.

Emily sent a beautiful note to Tyler Trowbridge when he moved into his new apartment back in March. Building on that, she is now hard at work creating encouraging note cards with her artwork. These carefully, lovingly crafted pictures will be included in the purple backpacks. Emily hopes her cards will remind another human of their worth and give them a reason to smile.

Emily’s goals: Create a piece of art and collect socks for each recipient of our Purple Backpack Project! Email ashleynconnor@hotmail.com if you’d like to help Emily achieve her sock goal!

Elaina & Kennedy

Elaina and Kennedy are two amazing 11 year olds who attend Grand Rapids Public Museum School. Both girls thought it would be a great idea to help Dirt City Sanctuary and be part of the Purple Backpack Project Challenge.

Museum school emphasizes community enrichment so Elaina and Kennedy couldn’t pass up the opportunity to help those in need in Grand Rapids. Elaina and Kennedy have spear headed a donation campaign at their school. Both girls are hoping to raise awareness of the needs of the homeless in Kent County and make a difference.

Elaina and Kennedy also are doing this challenge in memory of Jordan Blaauw. Elaina wants to make sure her brother Jordan’s legacy of helping the homeless lives on. Kennedy wants to make a difference in Jordan’s honor.

We all want to raise children who are engaged with their communities, who help others in need, and who work to make the world a better place! Volunteering and charitable giving reinforces these values and helps children develop empathy and compassion. We would love to hear about an idea your child has to help with our Purple Backpack Project! Email wendy@dirtcitysanctuary.org if your little one wants to get involved!
